A young man decided to visit a market known for its talented artists. He hoped to find someone or something to help him release (释放) the great forces in his heart.
When he was walking through the large noisy outdoor market, he felt that nothing seemed special. However, his ear caught a light sound of drops of water from the other side of an old wooden house. Coming upon an open gate, he saw a young woman sitting in an open yard
around her with all kinds of stone sculptures (雕刻) of wild animals. Although these creations were in different times of completion, they already turned out unbelievable value.
Just then the young lady stood up, pulling a little hammer out of her pocket, and she walked toward a large stone that was placed on a work base. After careful examination of one small area, she hit it—just once—with her small hammer. She used so little force, so the young man felt sorry for her timidity (胆怯). He thought she must be a learner.
Suddenly tons of small pieces of the stone broke away. He thought she made a mistake and had broken the whole stone into pieces. A moment later he found she had not broken the stone, instead, she had released its secret character. With one hit she had not only uncovered a beautiful white material, but had shaped it to look like the beautiful neck of a great swan. He was shocked. What magic was this? He expected to know.
“Oh,” she laughed. “I’m guessing you’ve only been there in the last few minutes. Before you began watching me I had had hundreds of similar small hits to the exact same spot on that stone. You saw the result of many days of careful work matched with a special kind of quiet consideration.”
“That’s how all great things are achieved…lasting attention matched with continuous effort—a little bit at a time—until the right time comes. Then nothing can get in the way of what must be released,” the young lady continued. Suddenly, the young man seemed to understand something.

School backpacks have been a hot topic in China recently. Some Chinese parents buy hardcover school backpacks from Japan, although they can be as expensive as 5,000 yuan, according to Chinese newspaper Urban Express. These backpacks are popular because the hard cover helps hold books in place. This can help kids keep their balance and protect their spines(脊柱). But it turns out that the bags can barely fit in the students’ desks.
A good backpack is important for children’s health. “It can relieve (减轻) pressure from the shoulders,” says Dr Rob Danoff from the US. He also says students need a backpack that’s made for the child’s size. Cushioned (加垫的) backs and shoulder straps (带子) will help them avoid pain. However, the biggest problem for school backpacks is that they are too heavy, noted Hou Weiguang, a doctor in Chengdu. In China, students have many textbooks and exercise books. The weight makes many kids suffer from side-bending (侧弯的) spines, Hou said. He suggests that a backpack should be no more than 15 percent of a child’s body weight to avoid pain or injury. Parents need to make sure their kids only carry what they need. Schools and governments need to help too, added Zheng Yongshun, an education official from Hong Kong. He said schools should offer locker (储物柜) space and shared books so kids can carry fewer books. 21.Why are hardcover school backpacks popular? A.Because they are quite expensive. C.Because they can perfectly fit into desks.
B.Because they are made in Japan. D.Because they help protect kids’ spines.
