He remembered that back then a girl sometimes played with him. But he couldn't remember her clearly. After all, it had been so many years before.

Last week, Tom decided to visit his aunt. And he called her first. \"Hello, Auntie. This is Tom. How are you?\" asked Tom over the phone.

\"I'm fine, Tom. Thanks. I'm just a bit lonely, \"said Tom's aunt. Hearing that, he knew he had made a right

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War Ⅱ and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not be returning.

Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, “Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck.” And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.

“I'm sorry. Do I know you?” Eliza asked.

“I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend,” the old woman replied. “She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours.” Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. The other day, a friend of mine, whose name was Jack, received a car from his elder brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve, when Jack came out of his office, a dirty, shabby little boy was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it very much.

“Is this your car, mister?\\” he asked in a low voice.

Jack nodded and said proudly, “Yes, my elder brother gave it to me as a Christmas present.\\” The boy was rather astonished. “You mean that your elder brother just gave the car to you and it didn't cost you anything? I wish ...\\” he hesitated.

Of course, Jack knew what the boy was going to wish for. He was going to wish that he had an elder brother like that. But what the little boy said jarred (刺激) Jack all the way down to his heels.

“I wish,\\” the boy went on, “that I could be an elder brother like that and could also give a car to my little brother as a Christmas present.\\”

Jack looked at the boy in astonishment and then impulsively (冲动地) said, “Would you like to have a ride in my car?\\”

“Oh, yes. I'd love that,\\” said the boy.

After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes shining, and said shyly, “Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?\\”

During my first seven semesters as a medical student at Cadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I spent most of my time studying in classrooms and I rarely spoke with real patients in a hospital setting.

Then I started visiting the neurology ward (神经内科病房)at Dr. Sardjito Hospital, where I was gathering data for my paper. At the hospital I would review the medical records of newly admitted stroke patients, and interview them to find out if they took the pills.

One cold, rainy evening last October, I was in the hospital desperately “hunting” for the final three patients I needed to complete my study. The records showed that there was a 43-ycar-old stroke patient, whom I will call Ms. A. Holding a patient questionnaire, I walked towards her room. MS A was lying on bed 4B, clearly still weak. There were no nurses, relatives or friends with her. I sat down on a chair next to her, and asked how she was doing. She softly replied that she was getting better. When I told her that I wanted to gather some information from her, she agreed.

After I finished, I prepared to leave so that I could go through more medical records. Before I could stand up, Ms. A spoke up in her weak voice, haven't seen you here before, doc. Are you new?” “Not really. I don't come here every day,\" I replied. She started making conversation, asking why I was working so late in the evening. I was surprised someone in her condition would want to talk.

Soon Ms. A started talking about herself. She told me that she had three children in primary school, who were staying with a neighbor. \"My husband died a year ago and I'm the sole breadwinner of my family,\" said she. 注意:
