TheTL5209isanefficientPNPlow-dropout(LDO)regulatorthatiswellsuitedforportableapplications.IthassignificantlylowerquiescentcurrentthanpreviouslywasavailablefromtraditionalPNPregulatorsandallowsforashutdowncurrent(SOIC-8andTO-263)ofonly0.05µA(typical).TheTL5209alsohasverygooddropoutvoltagecharacteristics,requiringamaximumdropoutof60mVatlightloadsand500mVatfullload.Inaddition,theLDOalsohas1%outputvoltageaccuracyandextremelytightlineandloadregulationthatishardtomatchbyitsCMOScounterparts.
Fornoise-sensitiveapplications,theTL5209allowsforlow-noisecapabilityviaanexternalbypasscapacitorconnectedtotheBYPASSpin(SOIC-8andTO-263),whichreducestheoutputnoiseoftheregulator.Otherfeaturesincludecurrentlimiting,thermalshutdown,reverse-batteryprotection,andlowtemperaturecoefficient.TheTL5209isavailableinadjustableoutputandfixed-outputversionsof1.8V,2.5V,3V,3.3V,and5V.Offeredinsurface-mountpackagesofSOT-223,SOIC,andTO-263,theTL5209ischaracterizedforoperationoverthevirtualjunctiontemperaturerangesof–40°Cto125°C.

APPLICATIONINFORMATION
Enable/Shutdown
TheenablefunctionisonlyavailableintheSOIC(D)andTO-263(KTT)packages.TheENpinisCMOS-logiccompatible.WhenENisheldhigh(>2V),theregulatorisactive.Likewise,applyingalowsignal(<0.4Vat25°C)toENorleavingitopenshutsdowntheregulator.Iftheenable/shutdownfeatureisnotneeded,ENshouldbetiedtoVIN.
InputCapacitor
Iftheinputoftheregulatorislocatedmorethanteninchesfromthepower-supplyfilter,orifabatteryisusedtopowertheregulator,aminimum1-µFinputcapacitorisrecommended.
OutputCapacitor
AswithallPNPregulators,anoutputcapacitorisneededforstability.Therequiredminimumsizeofthisoutputcapacitordependsonseveralfactors,oneofwhichiswhetherabypasscapacitorisused.•Withnobypasscapacitor,aminimumCOUTof1µFisrecommended.
•Withabypasscapacitorof470pF(seeFigure6),aminimumCOUTof2.2µFisrecommended.•LargervaluesofCOUTarebeneficial,becausetheyimprovetheregulatortransientresponse.
Anotherfactorthatcandeterminetheminimumsizeoftheoutputcapacitoristheloadcurrent.Atlowloads,asmalleroutputcapacitorisneededforstability.
Theequivalentseriesresistance(ESR)oftheoutputcapacitoralsocanaffectregulatorstability.COUTshouldhaveanESRof≈1Ω,anditshouldhavearesonantfrequencyabove1MHz.ToolowanESRcancausetheoutputtohavealow-amplitudeoscillationand/orunderdampedtransientresponse.Mosttantalumoraluminumelectrolyticcapacitorscanbeusedfortheoutputcapacitors.However,careshouldbeusedatlowtemperatures,becausealuminumelectrolyticsuseelectrolytesthatcanfreezeatlowtemperature(≈–30°C).Solidtantalumcapacitorsdonotexhibitthisproblemandshouldbeusedbelow–25°C.
BypassCapacitor
Anoptionalbypasscapacitor,CBYP,canbeexternallyconnectedtotheregulatorviatheBYPpinforimprovednoiseperformance(onlyforSOICandTO-263packages).Connectedtotheinternalvoltagedividerandtheerroramplifieroftheregulator,thisbypasscapacitorfiltersthenoiseoftheinternalreferenceandreducesthenoiseeffectsontheerroramplifier.Theoverallresultisasignificantdropinoutputnoiseoftheregulator.A470-pFbypasscapacitorisrecommended.
Addingabypasscapacitorhasseveraleffectsontheregulatorthatmustbetakenintoaccount.First,thebypasscapacitorreducesthephasemarginoftheregulatorand,thus,theminimumCOUTneedstobeincreasedto2.2µF,aspreviouslymentioned.Second,uponstartupoftheregulator,thebypasscapacitorhasaneffectontheregulatorturn-ontime.Ifaslowramp-upoftheoutputisneeded,largervaluesofCBYPshouldbeused.Conversely,ifafastramp-upoftheoutputisneeded,useasmallerCBYPornoneatall.Ifabypasscapacitorisnotneeded,BYPshouldbeleftopen.
Low-VoltageOperation
WhenusingtheTL5209-18andTL5209-25involtage-sensitiveapplications,specialconsiderationsarerequired.Ifappropriateoutputandbypasscapacitorsarenotchosenproperly,thesedevicesmayexperienceatemporaryovershootoftheirnominalvoltages.
Atstart-up,thefullinputvoltageisinitiallyappliedacrosstheregulatorpasstransistor,causingittobetemporarilyfullyturnedon.Bycontrast,theerroramplifierandvoltage-referencecircuits,beingpoweredfromtheoutput,arenotpoweredupasfast.Inordertoslowdowntheoutputrampandgivetheerroramplifiertimetorespond,selectlargervaluesofoutputandbypasscapacitors.Thelongerramptimeoftheoutputallowstheregulatorenoughtimetorespondandkeepstheoutputfromovershootingitsnominalvalue.
Topreventanovershootwhenstartingupintoalightload(≈100µA),4.7-µFand470-pFcapacitorsarerecommendedfortheoutputandbypasscapacitors,respectively.Athigherloads,10-µFand470-pFcapacitorsshouldbeused.
