Part I Reading Comprehension (Reading In Depth) (50%)
Directions: There are 5 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or
unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Passage One
The old-fashioned general store is fast disappearing. This is, perhaps, a pity, because shopping today seems to lack that personal element which existed when the shopkeeper knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand of tea Mrs. Smith usually bought or what sort of washing-powder Mrs. Jones preferred. Not only was the shop a center of buying and selling, but also a social meeting place.
A prosperous general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so there were very few problems in management as far as the staff were concerned. But now that the supermarket has replaced the general store, the job of the manager has changed completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems of running a large business.
Every morning the manager must, like the commander of an army division, carry out an inspection of his store to make sure that everything is ready for the business of the day. He must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make decisions as problems arise; and he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently with their respective responsibilities.
No matter what he has to do throughout the day, however, the supermarket manager must be ready for any emergency that may arise. They say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have dealt with a flood, a fire, a birth and a death in your store.

C) An experienced supermarket manager will surely meet with a flood or a fire in his lifetime. D)An experienced supermarket manager must have dealt with emergencies of one kind or another. Passage Two
Many of us believe that a person’s mind becomes less active as he grows older. But this is not true, according to Dr. Gates, professor of psychiatry at the University of California. She has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of identical twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Gates continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline as was expected.
However, there was some decline in their psycho-motor speed. This means that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Gates’ studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only with those in their 30s and 40s, but with those in their 60s and 70s as well.
It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call “loss of memory” is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble hearing, or poor vision, or inattention, or was trying to learn the new thing at too fast a pace. In the cases where the older person’s mind really seems to decay, it is not necessarily a sign of decay due to old age. Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state.

Passage Three
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps 80 percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon (结肠).
Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers in the U.S. realized that nitrates (硝酸盐), commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives (添加剂), caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful.
The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and
共 11 页 第 3 页
poultry to cure some diseases, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal (医疗的) purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market in a faster way. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

D) Food and our health.
12. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A) More than half of cancer may be caused by problems related to food.
B) Penicillin is given to animals not for medicinal purposes but for financial reasons. C) We eat some food additives directly and some indirectly.
D) Researchers have known about the potential danger of food additives for many years. 13. Why do farmers give drugs to their animals? A) To make the animals healthier B) To speed up the growth of animals C) To make the animals’ meat fit to eat D) To make the animals’ meat more tasty
14. It can be inferred from the passage that___________.
A) scientists have made all the food fit to eat thanks to the advance in science
B) only in recent years have people found that nitrates are related to the cancer of colon C) some additives harmful to our health are in a way not so obviously noticed
D) all kinds of cancer are related to the diet that are characteristic of a certain culture 15. The word “carcinogenic” in the second paragraph most probably means___________. A) very healthy B) quite nutritious
C) may cure our disease D) may cause cancer
Passage Four
You must face the fact that in your inmost heart you hate the thought of moving. It is easiest not to leave the rooms where your children passed through their wonderful childhood and annoying teens to a friendly but slightly distant maturity.
Until, suddenly one day, the distance is absolute and they are grown up and gone. Then you find yourself living in too large a house, which consumes in its maintenance too much energy and money. When we found ourselves in this situation a few years ago, we determined to move while we still had the strength and before the emotional ties that the old house had wrapped

around us became too powerful to be broken. Move while you can! But be sure you really want to, and do not move too often. It is an exhausting process.
Your first task is to find a house that will suit you. It must be smaller, quieter, easier to run, and more conveniently placed for transport. Not so small, though, that it will not have room for your largest pieces of furniture, and located not too far from the neighborhood where so many friendships have been built up.
At last we found one: a late Victorian cottage, in a street where the houses, all small, range from late 18th to mid 20th century. It was near enough to where we wanted to live. It had no basement (底下层), which was a great convenience for aging legs; there were only two floors: one for ourselves and one where friends, children, and grandchildren could spread themselves when they came to stay. Each floor had two rooms. There was a kitchen on the ground floor, with the bathroom above it.

C) buying a better house when people have more money to spend
D) buying a smaller house for older people whose children have left home 17.The passage implies that grown-up children are ___________. A) more friendly to their parents when they are grown up B) distant from their parents C) friendly but not very close D) annoying

C) when he suddenly got the strength to do so D) before the house collapsed

20. According to the passage, the new house had ___________. A) two floors B) three floors C) four floors D) two bathrooms Passage Five
Is teaching important? Well, of course it is. There was a time when all necessary knowledge could be taught to the young by family members. But as societies became more complex and
共 11 页 第 5 页
division of labor more common, it was impossible for family members to teach the information and skills young people needed to become useful members of the society. As the need for specialists appeared, the job of teaching came into being in our country, and teaching as a job has been of increasing importance over the past one hundred years. Today, we have strict rules for teachers. We hope all children can go to school. Many things tell us that teaching is indeed an \"important\" job.
In recent years, there has been an increasing need for teachers to be \"responsible\". This means that the public expects teachers to succeed in teaching important information to the young. Teachers' salaries today, while not much, certainly are much higher than they were in the past. These increases have come about because people have realized that quality people, individuals who are highly able to teach, will not do it if they are not offered enough money. Today almost no one says that \"anybody will do\" for a teacher. The public expects \"quality people\" to teach the young, and progress is being made to give salaries that will make people who have abilities become teachers.
21. In the author's opinion, the job of a teacher ___________. A) is done best by family members B) is too complex for most people C) is free of rules D) is important for society
22. The cause for the new job of \"teacher\" was ___________. A) the increased importance of labor B) the need for specialists
C) the strict rules of the government
D) the increased number of children in school
23. According to the writer, ___________ is on the increase nowadays. A) a need for teachers to have responsibility for themselves B) a need for teachers to teach responsibility to students C) the numbers of students who are entering school D) the numbers of people who take the job of teacher 24. We learn from this passage that ___________. A) money encourages teachers to be responsible
B) money is not a responsible reason to become a teacher C) money is a good way to attract people to become teachers D) money was much higher for teachers in the past 25. What do people hardly ever say these days? A) Anyone can be a teacher. B) Progress is being made. C) Teachers have abilities.
D) Quality people are teaching the young.
