If you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia (蒙古) and some friends ask you to eat with them, what kind of manners do they want you to have? energy-saving (节能) policemen?

A group of 22 of these new policemen went to work last week in Beijing. They go around the city to see the use of energy in hotels, office buildings, shopping centers and other public places. One of their aims is to make sure that these places have set their air conditioning (空调) no cooler than 26 ℃.

\"If everyone sets their air conditioning at 26 ℃, Beijing will save 400 million kilowatt-hours of electricity in one summer. That's one-third of all the usage of the city in the season,\" said a TV advertisement.

Other Chinese cities, like Wuhan in Hubei Province and Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province, are going to follow Beijing's steps in setting up a similar police team.

From 1986 to 2005, China met 20 warm winters. It means that Chinese cities have to spend billions of yuan solving the environmental problems every year.

To introduce a green life to the public, Beijing also held a show on energy-saving technology and productions last week. It attracted lots of attention.

16、THIS year the US Mint will honor one of the country’s most famous writers.

“Mark Twain”, the pen name of Samuel Clemens(1835-1911) is loved by American readers for his novels Tom Sawyer(1876) and The Adventures of Huckberry Finn(1844).

Now he is going to have his life and work commemorated(纪念) with special gold and silver coins.

But does Twain need to be commemorated? It doesn’t seem like people in the US will forget him. Twain once joked that a lack(缺少)of money is the root of all evil(邪恶)” but a lack of money with Twain’s famous face on it wouldn’t have made people forget about him.

The Adventures of Huckberry Finn is thought to be his greatest works.

Motherless Huck Finn is a young boy who shows the spirit of freedom. But it could be said that Huck’s freedom really comes from Huck wanting to fly. When Huck gets away from his violent(暴力的) father, he isn’t really looking for freedom, but survival.

It’s even more of a problem for a slave. Jim, the escaped(逃跑的) slave who Huck helps, makes Huck’s life seem even better. It’s easier not to be able to deal with someone who wants to force you to go to school than to have to fight a law that says you are a piece of property(财产).

Huck and Jim’s friendship, as shown by Mark Twain, is one of the great stories in American literature because it shows a white character, Huck, who gets an idea of the African American experience.

Mark Twain is famous and would still be famous without any special coins. Anyway, the coins could be a reason to look again at the work of a writer who got under the skin of the US in the 19th century.

With the race issue(种族问题)______in the US today, perhaps Twain still has something to teach today’s readers. 1.How many novels is mentioned written by Mark Twain in this passage? A.One B.Two C.Three D.Four

2.Why is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn considered Twain’s greatest works? A.It talks about how a black slave runs away from his violent owner. B.It describes an everlasting friendship between people of different races. C.It describes the social problem that a lack of money is the root of all evil. D.It talks about a white American understanding the African American experience. 3.According to the passage, which statement is NOT true? A.Huck gets away from his father for survival. B.Jim escapes from his slave owner for freedom. C.Twain dug deeply into American society of his times.

D.Without the special coins, he’ll probably be forgotten. 4.The underlined phrase “far from dead” probably means _______. A.still being there. B.Becoming more serious. C.Being in danger. D.Gone for a long time. 5.What’s the main purpose of the article?

A.To tell the story of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

B.To tell readers about the special coins created to honor Mark Twain. C.To explore why the US still remembers and honors Mark Twain. D.To draw readers’ attention to the many race issues in the US today.

The journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing 17、

before eight o’clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late. I walked around the house many times over, checking to see that all was in order.

It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found everything looked unfamiliar(不熟悉的) to me. I began to have a feeling of nervousness mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep(陡峭的) drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I thought I had to stop the car for a moment to think carefully.

I stopped my car and walked out of it. On the one side of the road, small trees grew closely together, while on the other I could now see the countryside far away and a town nearby.

I waked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white-haired man. He called to me again and gave me a sign to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine. 1.Why did the writer set off later than planned? A.Because he checked the house again and again. B.Because he was feeling sad about leaving the house. C.Because packing his backpack took longer than expected. D.Because there was no one to help him get everything ready.

2.What caused the writer to start driving more slowly? A.He wanted to look at the beautiful hill carefully. B.He suddenly feared that he might get lost. C.The road became steeper and steeper. D.He realized he was driving too fast.

3.What can we infer about the white-haired man?

A.He was surprised to see the writer. B.He greatly enjoyed being alone. C.He used to be homeless. D.He was a nature lover. 4.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.The writer’s purpose in starting the trip. B.The writer’s courage in traveling alone. C.The writer’s mixed feelings about his trip. D.The writer’s experience of driving on the hill.

18、When US teenager Jake Olson isn’t playing football or golf for his high school, he’s often offering inspiration(灵感)through his new book about his own life.

These activities might be too much for the average 16-year-old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his father’s guidance.

It seems apparent that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle(肌肉) memory— repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature — have also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well. Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision from his left eye when he was a baby and eventually his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12 years old. Rather than letting the disease hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation(动力).“If I was going to sit on the couch all day, feeling sorry for myself, I wasn’t going to do anything. I decided that I was going to go out and persevere (坚持不懈).” he said. It was with that mind-set that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life. “It’s about opening the readers’ eyes to their true talent in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have,” Jake said.

Jake’s father, Brian Olson, said the family is impressed with what he has done with his life, including showing people that they can get through hardships. “Your darkest hour can soon become your brightest, and with every setback, there’s a setup,” Jake said. “In every one of us, there’s more potential than we can ever imagine, and it really is a choice.”

1.We can learn from the article that Jake Olson ▲ . A.was born with blindness B.has great muscle memory

C.was going to sit on the couch all day D.is trying to find the cure for his disease

2.According to the article, Jake’s family members ▲ . A.have pity on him deeply B.once gave up hope on him C.encouraged him to write the book

D.admire his efforts and determination(决心)

3.The purpose of the book Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life is to ▲ . A.explain what “a happier life” means B.ask people to get on well with disabled people B.help people get better life through his experiences C.encourage people to discover and use the potential

4.The underlined word “setback” is closest in meaning to ▲ . A.failure B.fight C.idea D.success Ⅴ.书面表达

At 14:28 on May 12, an earthquake broke out in Wenchuan. Soon people all over China went to the rescue. A

three-year-old boy named Lang Zheng was rescued from the debris by the PLA men ten hours after the earthquake. While he was lying on the stretcher, he slowly raised his right hand and saluted to the soldiers. His salute not only expressed his thanks to the people who saved him, but also moved the people around him. I was also deeply moved by his salute. As a three-year-old boy, he knew that the first thing to do was to express his thanks after he was saved. It is the good nature of the Chinese people.
