Ring a Bell
Ms. Tracy looked up from her yellow notebook and cleared her throat. The noise in the class died down as we turned toward her. \"We're going to help a charity to collect money by ringing a bell. Each of you will ring it for four hours,\" she announced. As the words left her lips, complaints could be heard around the room. Unwillingly, I dug for my planner and look notes. Four hours of ringing a stupid bell. Four hours that I could be studying for the SAT. Was this supposed to be a joke? I joined the students around the table and signed up for 1he first day of break-to get it over
with.
A few weeks later, I was standing next to the big blue-and-white Walmart. There was another guy holding a jar across from me. Great, I was going to be stuck here ringing a bell with a guy who was trying to get donations for another charity. To top it off, it was only about 4.4℃.
Slowly, I put on the red dress bearing the symbol of ow charity. I hoped that I already spent two minutes doing that, Ring! Ring! A group of older women came up with their walking sticks to drop in some change. А man with а broad-cimmеd bat came by and put some coins in. I checked my phone. Just 10 minutes had passed.
A strong bitterly-cold wind blew against my freezing face. I was starting to regret ignoring my mom's advice to wear a scarf. I looked up, wishing that time would pass more quickly. A few birds swept around the poles. The sky was gently blue. Palm trees waved in the cold wind. How comfortable it might be to curl(蜷缩)up with a hot cup of tea and a book on the cozy sofa. Then another ring brought me back to reality. 注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me. I saw his unbalanced shoulders and awkward figure. His hair was a mess and his shirt was dirty. I stopped ringing the bell, wondering what he was going to do. He pulled some change out of his worn pocket and reached towards the bucket. I couldn't help but say, \"Thank you, sir.\" He turned to smile. The money he donated was not a lot, but it was clearly a lot to him. This act of charity, though not much, was worth so much more than donations given by those who were better off.
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily. The bell rang so merrily that it attracted more people. I broadly smiled at everyone who approached me, feeling me shameful inside about my unwillingness and resistance when given the task. It was still chilly but I was bathed in the sunshine of kindness. Many say that these days people are becoming more and more selfish. I say that whoever believes that needs to go and ring a bell for a charity as I did
℃向某人走过来:walk toward/up to ℃掏出:pull out of/take/pick out 情绪类
℃感谢:thank sb for/show one’s appreciation/gratitude/be grateful ℃感到羞耻:be ashamed of/feel ashamed 【点睛】

Where were you when you first heard My Heart Will Go On? You know that love song that took over the world in the late 1990s, the one that ruled radios and television screens, that trilled through the air when you rang your neighbour’s doorbell, or rang out of a Valentine’s Day musical card—the song we love to hate now because it is almost shameful to admit how much we listened to it in 1998. I’m no fan of the song, but I’ll tell you one thing—it saved my life.
I remember where I was when I heard the song, 13 years old, only a few weeks away from receiving my class eight report card. When my mother and I went to collect it from school, the skies were grey. On the left side of the report card was the failure of my choosing—Maths, Physics and Chemistry—on the bottom of the right hand side it said Not Promoted(不升级) in red
ink. My mother, an English teacher in another Calcutta school, was too proud to beg the principal for the three marks I needed in Chemistry to be promoted to class nine. I walked along, thinking of the last song I was watching on MTV before we left for school. It was Dion’s all & shy; knowing hit My Heart Will Go On: “You have come to show you, go on...”
I was a fool to have ever thought that I could get away with not studying and watching MTV for hours on end. Till class eight, my father had refused to get a cable connection on the grounds that my brother and I would forever be glued to the screen, not study and fail the exams. The year after he gave in to his desire to watch late night football, I proved him right. I failed class eight because I was in love with the Backstreet Boys and would watch MTV all the time so that I wouldn’t miss a single video. That’s the whole truth and the band will never know the price I paid for my love. Paragraph 1:
Failing the year changed the world as I knew it.
________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2:
Some months later, when the talent competition was announced in school, I was picked for the final round.
________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】
Failing the year changed the world as I knew it. Overnight, it seemed as though everything had changed. I lost my friends in school because every conversation was filled with pity, theirs, and shame, mine. I was stopped from watching TV. At school, some teachers ignored my raising hands because I’d already studied the text before but failed. I used to love singing, now my life was filled with sadness.
Some months later, when the talent competition was announced in school, I was picked for the final round. On the day of the contest, I stood before the entire school, closed my eyes and sang the song. In that moment, I realized what “You have come to show you” meant to me—I had come to show me to my classmates and my teachers, to show them that I wasn’t just a girl who got held back, that failed, that I was good for something, that I was enough the way I was. Sometimes, when you sing like you mean the words, chances are you might win.
Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Everyone has his own weakness, but God always offers his unexpected strength in his misfortune. We’d make full use of it just like the girl below,we are certainly fortunate to be given other blessings from Heaven.
The story of one girl who decided to study judo(柔道) despite the fact that she had lost her left arm in a car accident.
The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. The girl was doing well. So she couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one move.
“Instructor,” the girl finally said,“Shouldn’t I be learning more moves? It isn’t far enough to learn just this.”
“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the instructor replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training. She didn’t dare to complain about anything and it was apparent that since her teacher said so,she had to follow
without any unhappiness.
Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first tournament. Surprising herself, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged. The girl skillfully used her one move to win the match. Still amazed by her success, the girl was now in the finals.
This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl appeared to be over-matched. Concerned that the girl might get hurt, the referee called a time out. She was about to stop the match when the instructor interrupted.
“No,” the instructor insisted,“Let her continue.”
Soon after the match started again, her opponent made a critical mistake: she dropped her guard. Instantly, the girl used her move to hold her opponent tightly. The girl had won the match and the tournament. She was the champion.
Paragraph 1:
On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. ___________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2:
“Two reasons account for that you won,”the teacher answered.
___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】
On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the girl took courage to ask what was really on her mind. “Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one move?Is there any magic power about it? Is my opponent much weaker than me?Please tell me the secret.” The judo instructor and his pupil talked excitedly as walking forward. She couldn’t wait to know the answer, but the instructor appeared unhurriedly. Finally he opened his mouth.
“Two reasons account for that you won,” the teacher answered.“First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm. It is your biggest weakness that makes you win the match. As a proverb says,‘Every coin has two sides.’ Making full use of your strength is your achievement. Please remember that in no case will you give up especially in trouble. God is fair to everyone.”
My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn't understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses. I didn't really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and l thought that I would surpass(超过) anything he had accomplished by the time l walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid, 70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way,
the farmer stopped and painted at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, \"A job's a big step to growing up. I'm glad you will be contributing to the household.\" My dad's words made me realize that my earning might not be mine to do with as wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn't interested. I decided it was not fair that l had to contribute my money. 注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: The pay day arrived at last.

Paragraph 1:
The pay day arrived at last. I was glad that I finally got the payment after working hard for two weeks. While walking back home with an excited mind. I conceived many plans about how to dispose of it. I needed a new football because the old one we played had already worn out. I intended to purchase my favorite chocolates. Upon approaching the house, I noticed my dad and mom standing beside the old truck, looking sadly. It
seemed as if something unpleasant happened. “How much do we still need to pay for a new truck?\". asked my mother. Three hundred dollars, but we just had two hundred left.”
Paragraph 2:
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about. Really, the truck my dad drove often broke down on the way, which made my dad in trouble. My parents had intended to buy a new truck but couldn't afford it. Suddenly, I realized what I should do. Stepping forward, I said, “Dad, here is what I received for my work. I think it would help you a little.” A little surprised at what I said, my mom hugged me tightly. That night, before I went to bed, l thought I would tell the farmer the next day that I would continue my work, after all l grew up.
