Passage 1 人链

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On July 8, 2017, eight members of a family in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach in Panhandle, Florida. As the sun sank lower on the horizon, the two boys Noah, 11, and Stephen, 8 swam into the waves without the grown-ups noticing. Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea. After trying and failing to swim back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had been off duty for the evening.

The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha, a couple from Georgia, heard them. They dived into the water and soon reached the two brothers. But after a few minutes, they were all trapped in a rip current (离岸流) — a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea! By then, some teenagers had heard the cry. One of the teens rushed into the water, grabbed Jacky, and pulled him back to shore. Meanwhile, Tabatha could feel herself being pulled farther out. She was already exhausted and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone.

Onshore, Jacky was terrified. A man stopped. “What’s wrong?” asked Shaun, who was heading back to his car. “My wife is drowning!” Brittany said. Shaun immediately strode (大步跨) into the water. But several minutes later, a gaping 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys. He knew that if he continued, he’d become another victim. He turned around to seek help.

It was about that time that Roberta, the boys’ mother, returned from the bathroom and looked around for her children. She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go. She fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them, but she quickly discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction. Looking around, Roberta sighed with relief to see some more people coming to help.

Paragraph 1

When they tried in vain to rescue the brothers and Tabatha,a risky idea came to them.

To keep themselves from losing their footing in the rip current, they began holding on to one another to form a human chain extending from the beach all the way out to the struggling and Tabatha. They stayed linked tightly and managed to ensure they were safe by making their feet firmly planted in the sand. However, that required more links—probably dozens of them. Shaun spotted other swimmers on the beach and shouted, “Don’t just stand there! Come and help.”

Paragraph 2

By then, more swimmers had also noticed the group in trouble and rushed to join the human chain. One by one, link by link, total strangers walked into the waves and grasped one

another by the wrists, determined that no one would die on that beach. At last, they made it and Tabatha and the two brothers were saved! “Those people on the beach are angels on earth,”said Roberta.“Whether it is the first person or the last person in the chain, they are all our heroes, who helped get our family out of trouble.”

Passage 2 水中救人

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

After study for hours, I went outside and up to the roof nearby for a break and watched

people swimming in the sea. It was a sunny day—a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance. I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis (小型海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my bodyboard (冲浪板)on the way and shouted at a stranger to call the coastguard(海岸警卫). My neighbor Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency—I'd never been trained as a lifeguard—but I didn't think twice about trying to save them.

I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

Tom and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Tom then moved the girl onto his board.

Paragraph 1:

We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out. We had to wail,

trying to keep them on the body boards. Patting their faces to wake them up, we continuously told them to be strong. After what seemed a century, I felt extremely exhausted while swimming hard to keep myself afloat. Casting a look at Tom, I could tell he was also

apparently worn- out. Looking at the vast sea, I felt a sense of fear surging through my whole body. Salt stinging my eyes, I could hardly know how long I could hold on. But 1 still shouted in my head: focus. In sheer desperation, I finally caught sight of some boats with lifeguards on them heading towards us in the distance. Thank you, Lord. Quite soon, I felt strong arms pull me out of the sea onto the board.

Paragraph 2:

That night, word came from the hospital that the two kids were in good condition.

Sighing with relief, I couldn’t stop thinking about the whole event. I knew they would have died if they had been in the sea for any longer. Obviously, I had done a big deal which is surely a good opportunity to show off. I had expected to experience some sort of sense of wellbeing or greatness, but none of that came. Rather than feel like a hero, I believe anyone who could swim would have done the same thing.

Passage 3打球落海

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

We lived not far from the sea, but I had never been allowed by my parents to play in the sea water. It was said that there was weed(水草) at the bottom of the water along the beach and of course it was dangerous to swim in the water. But I didn’t believe it and that day, I agreed to play with my friends on the beach. I had to lie to my parents since I would never get a chance to go out if I told them I would go to play on the beach without them in sight.

After breakfast, I read a book in my room for some time to wait from my mum to leave the house. But she kept working in the kitchen. I couldn’t waste time any more. Otherwise, Bobby and Jimmy would be angry.

I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk casually towards the back door. Mum asked me without looking up from her work of dishwashing, “Where are you going?’ I answered without hesitation, “I am going to the outside on the grass to play with Jack and Tim.” After I got out of the room, I breathed a sigh of relief. My plan had worked out fine so far. I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field a few feet away from my house and started running towards the bus stop at top speed. I was on the beach scanning the crowd for my friends Jimmy and Bobby about ten minutes later. After a while, I saw them near a coconut (椰子) tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunks(游泳裤).For about an hour, we played volleyball happily. Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell onto the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide(潮水) came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills, so I declared to help get the ball for them.

never have happened,” I thought regretfully. Just at that moment, I found a familiar figure running through the crowd towards me. It was my father. When he found that I was not playing outside on the grass, he knew quickly what happened and came to the beach as fast

It was a Sunday morning. Betty woke up earlier than usual. She couldn’t sleep any longer because she was so excited that her uncle Mark was taking her to the beach. She had always loved going surfing with her uncle. She put her swimming suit on and took quickly that she had prepared the night got before and went outside to wait. She jumped up and down with joy when she saw her uncle’s red jeep turn the corner down her street.

Uncle Mark got out of the car and helped Betty get in. “Are you ready?” he asked. “Yes!” replied Betty. Uncle Mark could see the excitement in her face. Suddenly he said seriously, “Well, before we go, I have to let you know that a shark appeared recently where we're going to surf today.” Scared and shocked, Betty couldn’t say a word. “Haha! I'm kidding you,” Uncle Mark burst out laughing. Betty laughed too. She knew Uncle Mark liked teasing others. “Let’s go and have some breakfast, I know just the place,” Uncle Mark said. They went to a breakfast shop and ate some tacos (炸玉米饼).

After breakfast the two of them went down to Pacific Beach and got their surfboards ready. “First you have to wax(打蜡)the bottom, explained Uncle Mark. “I know. I’ve watched you do it before!\" Betty said as she took the wax from Uncle Mark's hand. It took about 15 minutes to wax the bottom of their boards. When Betty finished, Uncle Mark

looked it over to make sure it was done well. “Nice job, Betty, you wax your board like a true surfer.”

Finally, they were ready to get into the water. They carried their boards down to the beach and went out into the water. Betty was overly excited and tried to rush to catch a wave. Predictably, she crashed and had to start over. Next was her uncle's turn. He stood up on his first try and smoothly surfed the wave before jumping into the water. Betty cheered for her uncle's perfect run.

Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

Sam Watts was a 37-year-old fisherman living and Working in Canada. One day, Sam planned to head out into the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5pm the next day. Joining Sam would be his crewman, 24-year-old Tom Buck.

Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was little that would keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves some 120 kilometers from land, Sam let out his three-kilometer-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far offshore. That changed around 1 am. Waves rocked the small boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride. “Get us out of here!” Tom screamed to Sam. “Let’s go back!”

With the winds and waves kicking up, the boat began to fill with water. Sam and Tom tried to pull in the fishing line together, but the high waves filled the boat with water, forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and fish in the sea. He then pointed the boat toward a port five hours away. Sam then called his boss, William Fox, to report his position.

With dawn coming, Sam spotted the rise of the mountains on the horizon. He was figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped. “I couldn’t believe it,” Sam said. “We were 24 kilometers off the coast, and the motor died.” High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. “William, William!” Sam yelled into the radio. “If you’re coming to get me, come now!”

“We’re coming!” William shouted back.

Passage 8 水中救人

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Gary Messina, an investment banking analyst, now 38, was on his morning run along New York City's East River. Suddenly something caught his eye-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-high railing (栏杆)that guarded the path from the water. As he got closer to the scene, the man took a step forward and jumped into the dark, rough river below. Messina rushed to the railing to find that the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. If he had intended to kill himself that morning, he had now changed his mind. The jumper screamed crazily for help as the rapids pulled him away from the seawall (防波堤).Other

joggers also heard the man's calling. John Green, now 31, immediately dropped his phone and keys on land, along with his sneakers, and jumped in the cold river. \"People had called the police, but it was unclear when they'd get there,\" says Green, a commercial insurance broker. \"I just reacted.\" Soon after that, Messina joined him in the river.

The flow was rapid while the temperature was freezing. Reaching to the jumper seemed to be a nearly impossible task for the two rescuers. Luckily, just as the jumper was losing strength, Green grabbed hold of him. The pair were about 30 yards from the seawall when Messina caught up with them. They stabilized the man, with Messina supporting his back and Green holding him up from either side. He was unresponsive but not unconscious.

As the men made their way toward the concrete seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Green had an awful realization: With the water flowing a good eight feet below the lip of the wail and no ladder or dock(码头)in sight, there was no way out of the river. What's worse, the jumper, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds, was deadweight in his rescuers' arms, which meant they could use only their legs to support themselves in the water.

Paragraph 1:

“A rescue boat is on its way,” someone yelled to them. Treading water was getting

tougher as time went by. After ten minutes, they managed to get to the river’s edge. Green tried wedging a hand and a foot into a tiny crack in the wall, resulting in cutting himself in the process. Fighting the current and holding the man above the water quickly became exhausting, so they gave in to drifting while staying as close to the wall as they could. Fortunately, the rescue boat finally came in sight.

Paragraph 2:

However, they encountered a new threat: The flow created by the rapids was sucking them under the boat. Messina remembers being pulled down just as the rescuers grabbed

onto the man, allowing him to let go. “I was completely out of energy,” he says. Somehow, he grasped a pole attached to the boat deck, which undisputedly brought him to safety. Within ten minutes, the group was back on land. The man they had saved was taken to the hospital for evaluation. As for the rescuers, both of them was at work by 10:30 a.m. “I was a bit late,” admits Green, smiling. “But I had a good excuse.”

One of my sisters who had worked abroad for the 10 years returned home for her vacation. All the family members were happy. My parents gave her a simple celebration and prepared food for us to share.

While I was staying with them, an idea came to me at the last moment. We could have a family outing on the beach. I immediately approached my siblings and told them about it. All of them agreed. It had been a long time since we went outing and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.

I felt the sea breeze as I stepped on the sand. The weather was fair and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coldness of it. My siblings placed out things in a big cottage. They brought many foods and planned to cook grilled fish and pork. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing food while the children went to swim. I was already a teenager but I couldn't swim. My brother had taught me so many times but I still sank. That was why I just played in the shallow part of the sea.

On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to take a ride on the boat. All of my siblings were busy and nobody could go with me. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman the rent and started to push it towards the shore. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. At first, I made it float and I really enjoyed it! I made it move forward and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly, the seawater became disturbing and large waves surrounded me. I couldn't control the movement of the boat anymore.

Feeling fortunate, I made up my mind to cherish life and not to try such adventure again. Mother said we would have a celebration for another life given to me.
