One of the hardest parts of living abroad is being away from your loved ones, especially your family. While my friends are so important to me, I've personally found it more difficult being away from family.

However, I was fortunate that my mum and sister recently found the time to see me. Both my sister and I have major birthdays this year as she's tuming 18 and I'll be 21. My sister is a very big music fan and this year, I created my status as the best older sister by keeping an eye out for music concerts in Paris. In our home town of Leicester, we don't regularly get many well-known artists playing in our city. But in Paris, I managed to get the best 18th birthday present of all: tickets for all three of us to see my sister's favorite American rapper, Angel Haze.

I will try to visit for my sister's actual birthday in June, the chance for my sister and my mum to visit became a birthday treat. The experience of finding our way together to the concert or getting to show them around the Paris sites such as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc du Triomphe and even my favorite ice cream place,Amorino, was an amazing memory for us all !Despite the fact that I felt the slight pressure to make sure the weekend went smoothly, even the heavy rain failed to dampen our mood.

Therefore, while it can be difficult being away from home and potentially missing big family moments, there are ways to avoid the sadness and find a way to make the best of your situation to create an unforgettable memory. Last year, when our three-year-old great-granddaughter Kylie was taken to see Santa Claus, she made sure to give him her wish list of toys. A week later, she ran into a different Santa in a mall. He stopped to ask what she wanted for Christmas. Kylie was surprised and let him know: “If you can't remember what I told you last week, how are you going to remember on Christmas Eve?” Mary Paul, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

As my son Mike and I drove to the mall, we passed a Salvation Army Santa ringing his bell. “Mike,” I said, “there's Santa!” He shook his head. “That's just some guy in a Santa suit,” he said. It saddened me to think that maybe my son no longer believed in Santa, and we drove the rest of the way in silence. At the mall, we spotted another Santa greeting young believers. Suddenly, Mike took off toward him. Turning back to me, he shouted. “Now, there's the real Santa!” Michael E. Fahey, Huntley, Illinois

We immigrated to America from China when I was six. Because I was shy and didn't speak English, I had few friends. My days were spent at home with my brother. Sometimes we'd help our neighbor Mr. Mueller pull weeds. One Christmas Day, there was a knock at the door. Grandma opened it, and there stood a big fellow in red with a snow-white beard, laughing, “Ho, ho, ho!” He handed out presents and made us laugh. I had so much fun. It was years later when I learned that our special Santa was our neighbor Mr. Mueller. Joanne Tang, Litchfield Park, Arizona

(1)Why was Kylie surprised when running into a different Santa?

A. Because she got what she wished. B. Because she knew who the Santa was. C. Because she wished to get another toy. D. Because she thought they were the same Santa. (2)What would Mike's parent feel as to Mike's different attitudes towards Santa? A. Angry. B. Sad. C. Confused. D. Understandable. (3)What did Mr. Mueller do on Christmas Day?

A. He stood outside our house. B. He gave out gifts by acting as Santa. C. He continued to pull weeds. D. He stayed with us in our home.

根据第二段中的“That's just some guy in a Santa suit,” he said. It saddened me to think that maybe my son no longer believed in Santa, and we drove the rest of the way in silence. At the mall, we spotted another Santa greeting young believers. Suddenly, Mike took off toward him. Turning back to me, he shouted. ‘Now, there's the real Santa!’” 根据最后一段中的“He handed out presents and made us laugh. 5.

If you're showering every day, you're probably over doing it. In fact, showering too often can actually hurt your body in the long run.

As Time's public health column explains, daily showers are common due to social norms more than any proper health need. We connect being freshly showered with being attractive and pleasing, so we tend to showering often to feel better.

But what's the ideal shower frequency? In terms of your health — not how you look or smell — probably once or twice a week, assistant professor of dermatology at George Washington University, Dr. C. Brandon Mitchell says. “Your body is naturally a well-oiled machine,” he says. “A daily shower isn't necessary.”

Of course, your situation may vary. If you have a job like car maintenance or construction, you'll obviously have a visible layer of dirt you'll need to wash off every single day. Similarly, if you work out every day, you may not have any health risks by washing every day, but you'll still be smelly. If you feel like you need to take daily showers for aesthetic(审美的)reasons, at least make most of them light showers. “I tell patients who shower daily not to soap their whole bodies,” Mitchell says. Hit your pits, butt and groin, which are the areas that produce strong smells. The rest of your body doesn't need much soaping, he says.

Too much time spent under the hot water can dry out your skin, cause cracks(裂纹)that can lead to infections or germs getting into your skin, and take away the natural oils on your skin that help keep it healthy. So, even if you're aiming to be your most presentable, be sure to keep it moderate to avoid hurting your skin in the long run.

(1)According to the passage, why do most people shower daily? A. To meet health need. B. To wash off dirt. C. To add to attraction. D. To get relaxation.

(2)Which of the following people might be advised to shower once or twice a week? A. Office staff B. Car maintainer C. Building workers D. Gym-goers (3)The underlined phrase “light showers” in Para . 4 refers to the showers in which ________.

A. bright lights are equipped B. a little soaping is involved C. gentle skin touches are allowed D. less hot water is used (4)What is the best title for the text?

A. Showering Daily Becomes a Custom B. Daily Shower Does No Good to You C. Protect Your Skin When Showering D. You Probably Needn't Shower Daily 【答案】(1)C (2)A (3)B (4)D

根据第二段中的“We connect being freshly showered with being attractive and pleasing, so we tend to showering often to feel better.”

根据第四段中的“If you have a job like car maintenance or construction, you'll obviously have a visible layer of dirt you'll need to wash off every single day. Similarly, if you work out every day, you may not have any health risks by washing every day, but you'll still be smelly.” 根据第四段中的“‘I tell patients who shower daily not to soap their whole bodies,’ Mitchell says. Hit your pits, butt and groin, which are the areas that produce strong smells. The rest of your body doesn't need much soaping, he says.

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness.

While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some.

Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a

hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision.

“We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause.

The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life.

(1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________.

A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs

C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol

(2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision?

A. They didn't fight for Danville High School any more. B. They all gave speeches to apologize in the local press.

C. They admitted their mistake in public in the gymnasium. D. They would never drink any alcohol throughout their life.

(3)Which word best describes the coach Rainville?

A. Indifferent. B. Strict. C. Stubborn. D. Cruel. (4)Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Growing up with pain B. A bad mistake

C. Team rules are everything D. Basketball girls in high school 【答案】(1)A (2)C (3)B (4)A

根据第一段中的“They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. (4)考查主旨大意。文章讲述了五个女孩因为喝酒被开除出篮球队的故事,文章最后一段对这件事情做了总结,因此可知文章主要想告诉读者这些女孩通过这件事学会了负责任,了解了自己的行为对他人的影响,诚实会让她们一生受益。因此推断A项“在痛苦中成长”为最佳标题。故选A。

It was the men's skating finals of the Winter Olympics when I was 16. Someday I'd be in the Olympics. In fact, it was my dream.

That night I lay on our living room floor excitedly watching the battle between the Brians: American Brian Boitano facing Brian Orser in Canada. Both of them had been world champions. Both of them deserved to win. Naturally I was for Brian Boitano, a northern Californian like me. We had skated on the same ice. I held my breath in amazement. Boitano performed successfully. The gold medal! I jumped in the air when his score went up.

But what happened next is what I'll never forget. Brian Boitano sat in front of the camera with his coach, surrounded by a group of journalist. He was talking about his career and his medal, talking to the whole world. A terrible sinking feeling went through me. I could never be in the Olympics, I thought…I could not talk in public like that. Just the idea of a press conference terrified me.

I loved skating partly because I didn't have to talk. I could express myself with my jump sand dances better. I didn't have to stand up and give a speech like some teachers expected. I could feel the blood rush to my face if I thought a teacher was going to call me. I stared at my shoes. I was sure I'd make a fool of myself.

The next day I was at the rink (溜冰场) as usual. I was practising a combination of jumps that had once seemed impossible. I worked very hard the next few years—on the ice and especially off. After journalists talked to me and although my heart pounded every time I spoke to them, I got to know them. They became familiar faces. And they got to know me. So when my big moment came four years after Brian's, I was ready.

Sometimes I think my biggest accomplishment was not winning the gold but talking to the

press afterwards. When you do the thing you fear most, you put an end to fear.

Fear can stop you dead in your tracks. Fear can kill a dream. What are you afraid of? What scares you more than anything else? This year, walk right up to it and conquer it, step by step. (1)What information can we get from the second paragraph? A. The author lived a hard life. B. The author comes from Canada.

C. The author once skated with Orser. D. The author wished Boitano to win the match. (2)What is one of the reasons why the author liked skating according to the passage? A. She could build up her body to be healthier. B. It could help her to get closer to her idol. C. She could better express herself with body language. D. The possibility of her being a world champion was great.

(3)What the author felt the most satisfied with is that .

A. she reached her coach's expectations B. she became a world champion as planned C. she managed to overcome her inner fear eventually D. she handled the balance between her career and life

(4)What does the author mainly want to tell us?

A. Face a fear bravely. B. Practice makes perfect. C. Bad times make a good man. D. Failure is the mother of success. 【答案】(1)D (2)C (3)C (4)A

根据第二段中的“Naturally l was for Brian Boitano, a northern Californian like me”可知作者希望Brian Boitano能赢,故选D。

根据第四段中的“I loved skating partly because I didn't have to talk. I could express myself with my jumps and dances better”可知作者不爱言谈,喜欢滑冰是因为这是表达自己的方式。

根据倒数第二段中的“Sometimes I think my biggest accomplishment was not winning the gold but talking to the press afterwards”可知他认为自己最大的成功是克服了自己的恐惧,勇敢面对记者。

根据最后一段中的“Fear can stop you dead in your track. Fear can kill a dream”和 “…walk right up to it and conquer it,step by step”可知作者想要告诉我们要勇敢面对自己的恐惧,故选A。

If you're a book lover, you have a pile of books on your bedside,or a bookshelf in your library with a“to read”sign on it.Yet you can't stop yourself from adding to the pile. This can lead to feelings of guilt over your new purchases. But I'm here to tell you to stop worrying. What you have is an antilibrary , and it's a very good thing. The term comes from writer Umberto Eco.He is the owner of a large personal library. He separates visitors into two groups:those who react with“Wow! What a library you have! How many of these books have you read?”and the others who get the point that a private library is not something to show off but a research too1.Read books are far less valuable than unread ones.Indeed, the more you know, the larger the rows of unread books.Let us call this collection an antilibrary. If you think you already know everything about a subject, you're cutting yourself off from a stream of information at an artificial point. So a growing library of books you haven't read means you're consistently curious about the unknown. And that attitude is a great foundation for a lifelong love of 1earning.

So don't feel guilt over your unread books. Those books will be there for you when you do want them, and as you build your library of read and unread books, you can start using it as you would use a bigger library.Certain books may become references more than read-throughs.Or you may find that a book you bought five years ago has special relevance today.Letting the role of books evolve in your life is a healthy sign of curiosity. That's good for you and good for the world around you.

(1)What does the underlined word“antilibrary”in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Feelings of guilt over new books. B. A pile of books on the bookshelf. C. The collection of unread books. D. (2)D (3)A (4)B

Read books are far less valuable than unread ones.Indeed, the more you know, the larger the rows of unread books.Let us call this collection an antilibrary.

So a growing library of books you haven't read means you're consistently curious about the unknown.

Letting the role of books evolve in your life is a healthy sign of curiosity. That's good for you and good for the world around you.

Those books will be there for you when you do want them, and as you build your library of read and unread books, you can start using it as you would use a bigger library.Certain books may become references more than read-throughs.Or you may find that a book you bought five years ago has special relevance today. B。Noise-cancelling audio instruments have been around for a while now,but one Berlin-based designer believes that blocking“visual noise”is as important,if not more so,as cancelling out unwanted sounds. To this end he has created a simple accessory called the Focus Cap

A study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important. These experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they often have higher IQs. Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion(万亿)connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.

Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at distinguishing different sound

patterns. Her researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern\"A-B-B\". Another order was mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern “A-B-C”. The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the\" A-B-B\" pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive to where it occurred in the order. Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is the building block of words and grammar.\" Position is key to language,\" she says. \"If something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference: John caught the bear.' is very different from 'The bear caught John.'”

Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet, or smartphones-no matter how educational-doesn't appear to be enough for children's brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American babies. They expected the first group who'd watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of learning as the second group who were brought face-to-face with the same sounds. Instead they found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish between similar Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies-regardless of whether they had watched the video or listened to the audio-learned nothing. (1)What makes connections in a baby's brain?

A. Having a higher IQ. B. Experiencing new information. C. The baby' early age. D. The connection with other babies. (2)What did Judit Gervain and her team find in the experiment? A. Babies identify different sound patterns. B. Word order is relevant to meaning. C. Babies can well understand different words. D. A certain brain region processes language.

(3)What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 3? A. Grammar is important in learning languages. B. Different orders have different meanings. C. Different languages have different grammar. D. Words have different sounds.

(4)What is the main conclusion from the study led by Patricia Kuhl? A. Babies shouldn't watch a lot of television.

B. Listening to different languages develops babies' brain. C. Foreign languages help babies' brain develop.

D. Social communication improves babies' brain development. 【答案】 (1)B (2)A (3)B (4)D

Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain.

The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the\" A-B-B\" pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. 根据第三段\"If something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference: 'John caught the bear.' is very different from 'The bear caught John.'”可知,有些东西放在句首和句尾,会有很大的不同,比如John抓住了熊,和熊抓住了John,意思是不一样的,可知本句意思为位置对于语言来说很重要的,顺序不同,意思不同,故选B。 (4)推理判断题。根据最后一段Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet, or smartphones-no matter how educational-doesn't appear to be enough for children's brain development.
