I have a younger brother. To me, he is a fourteen-year-old kid named Joe, with blond hair and blue eyes. To others, he is different. Where I see a kid who just needs a lot more attention, others see a mentally disabled boy, a kid who cannot walk or talk or think for himself. I see someone who just makes daily routine a bit less routine. Others see an annoyance, a bother.

This is not to say that I have never felt resentful(怨恨的) toward Joe. He is my brother, and

with that comes responsibility. “Gina, could you stay in tonight and watch your brother? ” “Gina, do me a favor and feed him dinner and change his diaper(尿布) later, p lease?” “Could you co me home right after school today and get Joe off the bus?”

These are phrases that I have heard since I was twelve. And sure, they have made me resent my brother to a certain extent. I would think: that’s not fair! Everyone else can stay after and be a member of this club, or get extra help from that teacher. Or, all my friends are going out tonight,

why can’t I? And, How come I have to feed him? He is not my son!

However, the small amount of resentment I feel toward my brother is erased a thousand times over by what I have learned from him. Besides making me responsible from a young age, and helping me be more accepting of all kinds of people, he has taught me to be thankful for what I

have.

I know that there are moments in my life that I should cherish and that Joe will never experience. He will never laugh so hard that he cries. He will never feel the glory of a straight -A report card. He will never comfort a best friend crying on his shoulder. And he will never know how much his family love him.

Because he will never know, it is up to me to know, every second, how lucky I am. It is up to me to realize that life should be lived to its fullest, and that you should always, always be grateful that God, or whoever are the powers that be, gave you the ability to live your life the way you were meant to live it.

A. why

B. how C. what D. when

26. If mother asks Gina to look after her brother now, what will she probably answer?

D. It's not fair!

27. The passage intends to tell us that we should .

A. value the glory of success

B. appreciate what life gives us

C. comfort unfortunate people

D. treasure meaningful moments

Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.

Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收缩)and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.

Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and S ussex Medical School said: “Our study shows for the

first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”

The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts ca n also affect what we see and what we don't see—and guide whether we see fear.”

To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner to show how the

brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear.

“We have found an important mec ha nism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,” Dr Garfinkel said.

“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.” 28. What is the finding of the study?

A. One's fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear. B. Fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat. C. Fear has something to do with one's health. D. One's heart affects how he feels fear. 29. The study was carried out by analyzing .

A. volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scans

B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions

C. volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures

D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication

30. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “mechanism” in Paragraph

6?

A. order.

B. machine. C. system. D. treatment.

31. This study may contribute to .

A. explaining the cycle of fear and anxiety

B. treating anxiety and stress better

C. finding the key to the heart-brain communication

D. understanding different fears in our hearts and heads

Prices determine hot resources which are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed (定量安排) among buyers. The price system of the United States is very complex network made up of the prices of all the products

bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a variety of services,

including labor, professional transportation, and public facilities. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the system of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.

If one wants to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price”, many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by buyer to the seller of a product or service, in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, reasonable as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amount of money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that supply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that make up the total “package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they

may evaluate a given price.

32. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Potential Weaknesses of the Price System

B. The Complexities of the Price System

C. Credit Terms in Transaction

D. Resource Allocation (安排) and the Public Facilities

33. According to the passage, the price system is related primarily to .

A. labor and education

B. transportation and insurance

C. facilities and repairs D. products and services

34. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a factor in the complete understanding

of price?

A. Instructions that come with a product B. The quantity of a product C. The quality of product

D. Guarantees over a product

35. The paragraph following the passage most likely

discusses .

A. unusual ways to advertise products

B. types of payment plans for service

C. theories about how products affect different levels of society

D. how certain factors of price “package” influence market.

其次节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 依据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Most of us may have the same feeling: we have a lot of work to do but a momentary feeling of laziness. 36 This is either because we lack the inspiration or are not encouraged enough to start working.

37 It often leads to the worsening of one’s relationship at work and affects work performance, which can result into job loss and extra stress. How to overcome laziness? Here are some tips for overcoming it.

Simple things first. An effective trick that helps you fight laziness effectively is to start with the

simple things first. 38

Make a to-do list. 39 A to-do list can help us to realize that it often looks like more work than it actually is. When you create your to-do list, make sure to arrange the tasks from the

easiest one to the more difficult one.

Remove distractions. Distractions are often the source for our laziness. We are often attracted by the distractions (TV, internet, etc.) as we perform our tasks. 40 Make sure that once you have started with one of your tasks, you will not get distracted from it by any means. Remember, every time you manage to overcome laziness, reward yourself.

A. Regard a task as an exercise.

B. Whatever it is that distracts you, remove it!

C. That will slowly but surely break your inner resistance.

D. Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation with a pile of work.

E. We do not feel energized and just don’t want to do particular activities.

F. It is important that you focus your mind on the benefits, not on the difficulties.

G. Though often seen as a forgivable weakness, laziness can have a number of negative effects on a person.
