Most of us have suffered the pain of broken friendships. But most friendships can be mended. If there’s a broken friendship you’d like to mend, try the following advice. Give your friend the benefit of the doubt(姑且相信).

It’s easy to assume the worst. But if a friend has hurt you, he may not even realize he’s done so. It's probably true that if someone hurts you, they should have known it better. But the fact is that we are all human and we mess things up. You need to give people the benefit of the doubt because you will need that, as well.

Take the initiative to communicate with your friend.

If you’ve been hurt, your instinct (本能) is probably to pull away and protect yourself. But if you do this, the friendship will likely die. \"You need to reach out,\" says 20-year-old Jamie, who has restored several broken friendships, \"Friendships get broken when trust is lost. Both friends need to reach out and demonstrate they are trustworthy.\" Be the first to apologize.

Even if you were hurt, apologize for anything you did wrong. Give up your right to be proven right. Otherwise the conflict won’t be forgotten, as it should be. Walk through the conflict together.

Start by trying to see things from your friend’s point of view. Talk about the problems openly but kindly.

At first, Jessica didn’t understand why Joyce stopped talking to her. Joyce finally explained that Jessica's teasing (取笑) annoyed her. \"I finally found out she was angry because I teased her in front of the boys in our class.\" Jessica explained. Jessica meant nothing by her teasing and thought it shouldn’t bother Joyce. But when she accepted that it was embarrassing to Joyce, she stopped. Then their friendship could heal.

Accept the fact that friendship may change.

Nicole and Michelle had been best friends since preschool. But in college, Michelle suddenly pulled away. \"We didn’t talk to each other for a while, then tried to reconcile,\" Nicole says, \"But we’re just polite acquaintances now.\"

It’s normal for friendships to change. Often two friends just drift apart. Problems come when one friend tries to hang on while the other friend lets go. If your friend isn’t willing to work things out, accept it and move on. But if you are able to reconcile, you’ll have a friendship that’s tried-and-true!

6

56. Why did Joyce stop talking to Jessica?

A. Because Joyce didn’t understand Jessica.

B. Because what Joyce did was embarrassing to Jessica.

C. Because Jessica laughed at Joyce in front of the boys in their class. D. Because Joyce always made fun of Jessica in front of the boys. 57.

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. We should never give people the benefit of the doubt for they hurt us badly. B. Only one part needs to show trust when there is a broken friendship. C. It’s unacceptable for friendships to change, for it’s abnormal. D. You should be the first to apologize for anything you did wrong.

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s

house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when

I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism (乐观), but the idea did

not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end “ the hard times”.

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone

else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles

7

eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and

just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy. 58. Upon leaving for America the author felt _____. A. confused

B. amazed

C. worried

D. excited

59. For the first two years in New York, the author _____. A. often lost her way

B. did not think about her future C. got on well with her stepfather D. studied in three different schools

60. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4? A. She worked as a translator.

B. She attended a lot of job interviews. C. She helped her family with her English. D. She paid telephone bills for her family. 61. The main idea of the passage is _____. A. future will be free from troubles

B. optimism plays an important role in our life. C. there are more good things than bad things D. it is difficult to learn to become patient

C

When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?

Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term. They will also experience fear.

Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.

The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding

8

and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation(积极性). Today’s work place is all about relationships. Anyone works harder in a positive environment in which they’re recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the pay check is not the single most motivating factor (因素) in the work life of most people.

The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence---knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills. 62. An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when___. A.he thinks of his work as too heavy B.be cannot work at his best C.he feels his brain shut down D.he is forced to do things 63. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.People tend to associate leadership with fear B.Good relationship is the key to business success C.Working conditions affect people’s physical health D.Smart people are more functional in the work place

64. To positively influence employees a leader should first of all __.

A.provide better suggestions B.give his employees a pay raise C.develop his own personality D.hide his own emotion of fear 65. A good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to___

A.deal wisely with employees’ emotions B.help raise employee’s living standards C.give employees specific instructions D.provide a variety of project for employees

Beggars are often seen sitting by the side of a street with heads bowed as people pass them by.

10

Some ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given money. A few use aggressive behaviour to earn money.

To solve the problem of aggressive begging, an “alternative giving ” plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It aims to encourage people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give generously to local homeless causes.

Supporters of this plan think it will be an effective way to solve the beggars’ alcohol and drug problems. But the police oppose the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive cash may turn to criminality to feed their addictions. The homeless charity “Crisis” said the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and positive plans can help create local understanding and sympathy instead of hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes. Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Governments must play a big role in solving this problem. Training beggars to work and helping them to find appropriate jobs is one option. This is especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs exist.

The general community should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.

I know you are now having trouble communicating with others, and you may often feel lonely. That’s because you are new here and people don’t know about you. But I think you can make it if only you can follow the advice below.

First, you should take an active part in the discussions and show your own opinions about the

14

matters, and at the same time, learn to listen to other people’s views. Second, you should learn about your classmates' likes and dislikes. Then you can have much in common with them. This way, you can get to know more different people and show them that you are just as friendly. Last but not least, I’m always here ready to help. We can take part in some activities together and I can introduce you to others.

With time going on, people will know you better and will like to make friends with you if you can do as the above.

Best regards,
