We send our children to school to prepare them for the time when they grow up and will have to work for themselves. They learn their own language so that they will be able to tell others clearly what they want and what they know, and understand what others tell them. They learn foreign language in order to be able to understand the people from other countries and make themselves understood. They learn history to know something about human beings they meet every day. What they learn at school is, of course, quite useful, but is that the only reason why they go to school?

No. There is more in education than just learning facts. We go to school, above all, to learn how to learn, so that when we left school, we can continue to learn. A man who really knows how to learn will always be successful, because whenever he has to do something new, he will quickly teach himself how to do it in the best way. The uneducated person, on the other hand, is either unable to do something new, or does it badly. So the purpose of school is not just to teach the students these useful subjects but teach the way to learn. 21. Children are sent to school because___________. A. they can grow fast at school

B. they have to work for themselves at the moment C. the parents have to prepare them for their future D. they are able to learn facts

22. What does an educated person do when he meets something new? He will___________. A. quickly find the best way out B. try his best to do it C. be unable to do it well D. know how to learn 23. The main idea of the text is that___________

A. children must go to school B. the subjects at school are useful C. parents should send their children to school D. children should be taught how to learn

When our first grandchildren, Noah, was born, we were over the moon with excitement! We had expectations of what he would look like, how he would laugh, and how he would grow and develop like most babies. But

unfortunately, things didn't go as planned Noah faced a lot of health problems from the very beginning. It was difficult and trying time for our family as we watched him struggle. Doctors gave him a label(标签)that broke our hearts-\"failure to thrive(茁壮成长).”

One of the things we take for granted when we have children is their ability to eat. Unfortunately, Noah wasn't able to suck(吮吸)like most babies. He couldn't eat on his own, and it was heartbreaking for us to see him go through so much pain and discomfort. The doctors had to give him a feeding tube just to keep him alive.

One day, while I was at the grocery store, I saw a young mother walking by with her newborn baby. The baby started to cry a little, and in a disgusted(厌恶的)voice, the mother complained that she had to feed the baby again. It broke my heart to hear her complaining about something that I knew so many parents would be grateful for, So, I decided to share with her what Noah was going through. I told her, \"You have no idea how thankful my daughter would be to feed Noah like you're able to.\"

Noah is a unique and outgoing boy. Today, he's 13 years old, and he has come a long way since those early days. He has faced many challenges, but he has also achieved so much We're grateful that he can do things today that we never thought would be possible. 24. Why didn't things go as planned?

A. Because the author didn't see Noah's birth in person. B. Because the author was on the moon when Noah was born. C. Because Noah wasn't as normal as they had expected. D. Because Noah was born to be strong but couldn't laugh. 25. A feeding tube could help Noah___________.

A. breathe air freely B. learn to eat on his own C. feel less pain and discomfort D. take in what he needed to live 26. What did the author share with the young mother at the grocery store? A. How to be a good mother B. How to feed a baby

C. Noah's health condition D. Complaints from Noah's mother. 27. What does the author want to tell us in this story?

A. Life is not always fair. B. Be grateful for what we have C. How to make a child healthy. D. Work hard and achieve higher.

Shu Lin's Grandpa is a children's picture book. The book illustrated(加插图于)by British-Chinese artist Yu Rong was showcased(展示)at the London Book Fair. It caused a heated discussion about how to better tell Chinese stories to international readers.

The book tells a story about Shu Lin, a Chinese immigrant girl. Shu Lin is starting at a new school in Britain. She stands alone in the playground and at lunchtime she eats brightly colored food by herself. She doesn't speak English very well. But when Shu Lin's grandpa comes to school and shows the class his amazing Chinese paintings, everything changes!

In the book, Yu Rong uses paper-cutting and ink painting and other Chinese elements to create a painting style that is both classical and modern. Yu Rong's first picture books with Walket Books have been published in Britain, America, Italy, Japan, France and other countries. Yu Rong lives in the countryside of Cambridge with her husband, Donkey, and her three children, Caterpillar, Chili Pepper and Bean now.

Shu Lin's Grandpa, published in Chinese by Dandelion Children's Bookstore and in English by Otter-Barry Books, was shortlisted(列入决选名单)for the Kate Greenaway Medal this year, which is an important children's book award in Britain.

There is always a discussion about whether you should get your kids to do chores around the house or not. However, it really has so many benefits(益处)to children that I find it hard to see why you wouldn't get them to do a few regular chores.

The most important reason is that getting children to do chores gives them a lot of life skills. They need to understand how to clean, how to cook, how to shop etc…It is, however, one of the things that schools don't necessarily teach fully, so it is one of the main parts of learning that is down to parents to provide for children before they leave home.

Children like to feel proud about their achievements. Helping around the house can really help to give them a sense of pride, and giving them praise for helping will make them want to do more. They will feel happy to be able to help around the house, not just a bystanders.

Giving your children a specific job or a specific area in the house to look after will help them learn how to be responsible in later life. They will see the benefit of keeping things organized, clean and tidy-and also appreciate(感激)more what you do for them as they grow up.

Planning is a life skill that can be gained from helping around the house. As children get older, you can start to teach them how to understand the needs of themselves and others and plan accordingly. For example, if they help with the washing, then let them make sure that they do it in time. They may start to plan ahead.

All these reasons to get kids to do chores and help around the house mean that they'll grow up with a great set of skills that can be of benefit to them throughout their lives. Why not get started today? 32. Which is one of the life skills parents should teach kids?

A. When to move out in the future. B. Being confident in doing everything. C. How to wash clothes. D. Teaching themselves fully at school. 33. Children should___________ according to Paragraph4. A. learn what is responsibility B. have a sense of pride C. get good at planning D. learn what is teamwork 34. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

A. B. C. D.

35. What's the best title for the passage? A. Challenges through our life B. Reasons to get children to do chores

C. The importance of getting along with your children D. A discussion about whether kids should do chores or not

When were restaurants invented? Do you know about that? Actually, the first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.

The first restaurants were in ancient Greece and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. People didn't order food from a menu. Everyone used to share the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn't have to store food at home if they ate at these restaurants.

Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. All of these people had to eat. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the Imperial Way, a very big street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn't have to eat the same food as everyone else.

For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food on the street or at inns-small hotels. Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to restaurants we know today. There was a bigger variety of food, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, trains made travel much faster and simpler. In the end, this kind of restaurants began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.

Now restaurants are here and there. You can buy a variety of different kinds of food. You can ask someone to send food to your door. But remember it wasn't always like that.
