I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment(行李舱架)and sat down in my seat. Just before take-off , a
line of soldiers came down the aisle(过道)and filled all the empty seats.
After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for $5. As I
reached for my wallet to buy one, I overheard the soldier ask his buddy(伙伴)if he planned to buy lunch. “No,
that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. I’ll wait till we get to Chicago.” His friend agreed.
I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed
the flight attendant(服务人员)a $50 bill. “Take a lunch to all those soldiers.”
After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the restroom, A man stopped me.
“I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.” He handed me $25.
Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle. When he got to my row he
stopped and said: “I want to shake your hand. I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me
a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.” I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the
passengers.
Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in
front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another $25 in my hand.
When we landed in Chicago, I picked up my belongings. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man
who stopped me and put something in my shirt pocket. Another$25!
Upon entering the terminal(航站楼), I saw the soldiers gathering for t-heir trip to their base . I walked over
to them and handed them $75. “It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich.
God Bless You.” I said.
These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so
little.

NOWHERE is the dish of fish and chips more loved than in the UK. The former prime minister Winston
Churchill called fish and chips “the good companions (伙伴)”. According to the Daily Express, British soldiers
found one another during the D-Day landings by calling out the word “fish”, and if the reply was “chips” it meant
they had found another British soldier. The Independent newspaper even said the dish is more iconic (标志性的)
than the Queen or The Beatles in the UK.
On Oct 22, the fourth day of President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the UK, he tried classic fish and chips at a
traditional English pub with UK Prime Minister David Cameron.
So what is the dish? Quite simply, a boneless fish, usually cod (鳕鱼) or haddock (黑线鳕), is covered in
batter, a mixture of eggs, flour and milk, and deep-fried. The chips are thick slices of potato, also fried until they
are soft and golden brown.
Fish and chips can be cooked at home, but more often the British buy them from a fish and chip shop. To
keep prices low and let people read the news while eating, the takeaway dish used to be wrapped (包装) in old
newspaper. But in the 1980s, it was ruled unsafe for food to touch newspaper ink. Now fish and chips are usually
served in greaseproof (防油的) paper with salt and vinegar, and sometimes newspaper underneath. Britons take
them away to eat at work, on a park bench, or at home.
In fact, the dish is so popular in the UK that English actress Kate Winslet and famous soccer players Wayne
Rooney and John Terry all had fish and chips at their weddings.
In the minds of many, it’s also associated (相关的) with holidays. There can’t be many Britons who don’t
remember a rainy day in a seaside town that was cheered up with fish and chips. Often, the whole family eats it,
washing it down with big mugs (马克杯) of tea as they forget the wind and gray sky.
45. The main purpose of the article is ______.
A. to teach readers how to make fish and chips
B. to report which celebrities like fish and chips
C. to explain why Britons love fish and chips so much
D. to introduce the reader to the history of fish and chips
46. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Fish and chips is mainly a dish for busy people in Britain.
B. Many Britons love to eat fish and chips when they are depressed.
C. For many Britons, there is more to fish and chips than flavor.
D. In Britain, fish and chips is a traditional dish for an indoor family gathering.
47. Which of the following is TRUE about fish and chips according to the article?
A. It is becoming a less popular dish in the UK than it used to be.
B. It is a popular take-away dish that is usually wrapped in paper.
C. It consists of lightly-fried fish in batter and lightly-fried chipped potatoes.
D. Most British people prefer to make it at home rather than buy it from shops.

DAD was always full of advice, but one of the biggest lessons he taught me one summer was about having a
strong work ethic (道德). When my brother and I were growing up, we mowed (修剪) yards during the summer to
earn pocket change. Dad was our salesman. He told our neighbors about our service and offered a price they could
not refuse. My brother and I got $10 (64 yuan) per yard. I later found out that our friends were charging $20 or
more for the same amount of work.
Every time we headed out to mow lawns, Dad was there to watch. I used to wonder why he came with us.
He stood supervising (监督) our work in the heat when he could have been inside relaxing with air conditioning
and an icy drinking
One day we were cutting our next-door neighbor’s yard. She always waited until the grass was knee-high to
call us over. To make matters worse, we had an old lawn mower. This particular afternoon, I was finishing up and
was tired and sweaty.
I was just about to cut off the lawn mower when I saw Dad pointing to one piece of grass. He yelled: “You
missed a piece.”
I frowned, hoping he would let it slide and let me go home. He kept pointing. So, tired and disappointed, I
went back to cut that piece of grass. I mumbled to myself: “That one piece isn’t hurting anyone. Why won’t he
just let it go?”
But when I reached adulthood , I understood his message: When you’re running a business, the work you do
says a great deal about you. If you want to be seen as an entrepreneur (企业家) with integrity (诚实), you must
deliver a quality product. That single blade of grass meant the job was not done.
Other neighbors took notice of the good work we did and we soon got more business. We started out with
one client (客户), but by the end of the summer we had five.
48.What lesson did the author learn from his dad?
A. Being an honest person. B. Being strict with oneself.
C. How to earn pocket change. D. How to provide a quality product.
49. When the author worked on the neighbor’s yard, ______.
A. he was too tired to finish
B. he complained loudly about the tall grass
C. his father insisted on him being thorough
D. his father only appeared at the end for an inspection
50. When the author became an adult, he recognized that ______.
A. he should go to his father more often for advice
B. his father didn’t believe he could do his best
C. the product you deliver shows the face of your business
D. low prices and quality service are key to successful businesses
51. From the text, we can infer that ______.
A. the author always followed his father’s advice
B. the author decided to be a salesman just like his father
C. the author is thankful for the lesson his father taught him
D. the author believes that working for your neighbors is a good start for a business

Consider yourself warned. Sunday is April Fools’ Day, a day when you are
encouraged to pull pranks on loved ones, co-workers, acquaintances, and even that
one guy at the bus stop. It's an odd tradition, but how did it get started? What’s the
history of April Fools’ Day, anyway? Nobody is completely sure about the origin of this. However the urban
legend experts at Snopes.com say that most experts give credit to Pope Gregory XIII, who, in the 1500s, gave the
world the Gregorian calendar.
In 1562, the Gregorian calendar moved the first day of the year from April 1 to January 1. Word did
eventually get around, but some people were a bit slow to hear the news. These folks continued celebrating the
New Year on April 1, unaware that they were now three months behind the times. These “April fools” were
tricked by those in the know. The tradition eventually made its way to the USA.
And it’s still going strong. Over the past week, Web searches on “April fools day jokes” and “April fools day
pranks” have more than doubled, and related lookups for “easy April fools day pranks” and “April fools day jokes
for work” also dramatically increase. Lookups for “impossible April fools day word searches” are up 200%.
But really, there is no way to be certain you’ll escape trickery, because on April 1, even corporations are out
to trick you. In 1998, Burger King tricked its customers by releasing “the left-handed Whopper(左撇子巨无霸汉
堡)”. In 1957, the BBC reported Swiss farmers were harvesting spaghetti from trees. And in 1996, Taco Bell, a
famous food company in the United States, published advertisements in major newspapers announcing that the
company had purchased the Liberty Bell and renamed it the Taco Liberty Bell. Oh, my god, what fun!
52. Which of the following is close in meaning to the underlined phrase in the first paragraph? A. play tricks on B. take advantage of C. have games with D. tell jokes about
53. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about? A. When the Gregorian calendar came into being. B. Why they changed the day of the New Year. C. How the odd tradition got started in 1562. D. How the tradition passed on to the United States.
54. The examples of some large companies fooling people show that ______.
A. even large companies have to cheat people on April Fools’ Day B. it is not easy to escape from being tricked on April Fools’ Day C. some large companies may just act as foolishly as April fools
D. large companies can make profits by fooling people on April Fools’ Day
55. From the passage we can learn that ______.
A. you can’t make fun of strangers on April Fools' Day B. people will never know the real origin of April Fools’ Day C. some experts know the real origin of April Fools’ Day D. the tradition of April Fools' Day is even more popular today 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

【范文】
Dear LiMing,
that I know you are now having trouble communicating with others, and you may often feel lonely. That’s
because you are new here and people don’t know about you. But I think you can make it if only you can follow
the advice below.
First, you should take an active part in the discussions and show your own opinions about the matters, and at
the same time, learn to listen to other people’s views. Second, you should learn about your classmates' likes and
dislikes. Then you can have much in common with them. This way, you can get to know more different people
and show them that you are just as friendly. Last but not least, I’m always here ready to help. We can take part in
some activities together and I can introduce you to others.
With time going on, people will know you better and will like to make friends with you if you can do as the
above.
Best regards,
Li Hua
