On the first day of school our teacher introduced himself and encouraged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.

I turned around and found a little old lady with a warm smile. She said, “Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old.”

“Why are you in university at such a YOUNG age?” I asked. She replied, “I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of kids, and then retire and travel.”

I knew she was joking. I was curious(好奇的) what might have encouraged her to be taking on this

challenge at her age.

“I always dreamed of having a university education and now I'm getting one!” she told me. We became friends. Every day we would talk nonstop after class. I always enjoyed listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom(智慧) and experience with me. And Rose easily made friends wherever she went.

At the end of the term we invited Rose to make a little speech. She cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. I've learned a few secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.”

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change...”

Nina felt nervous this morning. She couldn't believe that she decided to try out for a talent show. She loved to sing but she disliked singing in front of other people. Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door of the theater and went inside. The room was filled with laughing children. Nina saw Luz, James and others from her class. The bright, sunny room left her no place to hide. A few teachers sat on chairs. They waited for the children to become quiet.

“Hi, Nina!” Luz called out. “I didn't think you would try out for the show. You are so timid(胆怯的) in front of people.”

“That's not true,” Nina said. “I'm not shy at all.” “Yeah, right,” Luz chuckled(轻声地笑) and ran off to find a seat. One by one the students got up on the stage(舞台) and did their acts. “Nina Martinez!” a voice called out. It was Mrs Brent, the music teacher. Nina rose from her chair. “I-I-” Nina began, and then stopped. “I can't,” she said softly. “Close your eyes,” said Mrs Brent gently. “Forget about everyone else. Just sing.”

Nina felt silly, but she gave it a try. She closed her eyes and raised her voice and sang out. Her hands stopped shaking. The song was so nice that everybody enjoyed it.

Ray Charles, a black singer and pianist of the USA. He had won 12 Grammy Awards(格莱美奖) and performed at 10,000 concerts around the world. Many musicians called him simply “The Genius”(天才).

Ray Charles was born into a poor family, without a father. When he was 5 years old, his younger brother died, and around the same time, Charles started to lose his sight. By the age of 7 he was completely blind. He had already been learning the piano for a year, and when he went blind, his mother knew this would be the only way he would make any money in the future. All his life, Charles remembered her saying: “Do it right, or don't do it at all.”

Later he went to a school for blind and deaf children. There the teachers also encouraged him to study music. Sadly, while he was still at school, his mother died. He left school and in the early 1950s Charles organized a group of players. He sang, played the piano and wrote music.

He made many classical CDs with famous artists such as Elton John and the Beatles.

In 2003 a film of his life Ray was made. The part of Charles was played by a younger actor and musician called Jamie Foxx. The film director brought Foxx to meet Charles. After they had been playing together for two hours, Charles, then aged 73, jumped up and said, “He's the one...he can do it.” A year later Charles died aged 74.
