1.（使）分裂；（被）拆分；(使）破碎
When somethingbreaks up or when youbreak itup, it separates or is divided into several smaller parts.

e.g. Civil war could come if the country breaksup...

2.（恋人）分手；（夫妻）结束关系

When a school or the pupils in itbreak up, the school term ends and the pupils start their holidays.

6.（因信号受到干扰）声音断断续续
If you say that someoneis breaking up when you are speaking to them on a mobile telephone, you mean that you can only hear parts of what they are saying because the signal is interrupted.

7.使（某人）失控
If somethingbreaks someoneup, it causes them to lose control and begin to laugh or cry.
